Agip Oil Well Head Leak Pollutes Biseni Community In Bayelsa

A leak in a well head has been discharging crude oil in Egbebiri area of Biseni in Yenagoa Council area of Bayelsa since Friday, February 7.

A Reporter said on Monday the leak, due to corrosion at Idu Well 3, operated by Agip, is spewing crude oil in gaseous form which liquefies and settles on the ground.

An Agip surveillance staffer found at the site, Mr Eno Doukpola, said the leak had been reported to the company but no steps had been taken to stop the leak.

“This leak was noticed on Friday and promptly reported to the surveillance department.  They asked me to put it in writing in addition to sending them a video clip I recorded with my phone."

He said the company had sent different groups of people to come and inspect the leak but what they needed is a maintenance team to stop the leak.

He added, “It started small but … the site is already surrounded by a pool of oil.   The leak is worsening by the day as more oil is gushing out as the pressure is widening the leak on the pipe."

Officials of Agip did not respond to requests for comment on the incident, and they declined to take calls to their cell phones.

A site supervisor who wished to remain anonymous confirmed, “The leak has made this whole area very unsafe.   The smell of the gas is very poisonous and I cannot continue to expose my workers to it.   We have to suspend work until something is done about the oil and gas discharge."
