Ekiti 2014: PDP men after Fayemi’s job

When it comes to high rate of churning out governors, no state can be compared to Ekiti  in Nigeria. Within the last eight years, Ekiti has produced  seven governors after the exit of the Second Civilian Governor of the State,Mr Ayo Fayose in October 2006.
fayAmong the seven people, who have ruled the state since 1999,  Otunba Adeniyi Adebayo, the first civilian governor of the state is the luckiest. So far, he is the only one who has completed a tenure in the Government House even though he failed to secure a second term.
No other governor of the state since then had recorded such a feat, to make the matter worse, the people of Ekiti State had  witnessed tenure of a governor as short as two days, 79 days, three months and three and- half years.
All things being equal, Governor Kayode Fayemi, the current governor of the state is  expected to also complete  his four-year first term but whether or not he will be handed a second term mandate is  contentious given unfolding events in the state christened the Fountain of Knowledge.
With the fixing of the governorship election for June by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) the leading political parties and aspirants are currently engaged in a flurry of activities to claim the Ekit Government House.
Though, there in no doubt that the state is currently in the process of re-engineering, rehabilitation, and reconstruction, as opportunity has provided itself in this year June for people to take their destiny in their hands by voting a person of their choice as the next civilian governor of the state, they would have ample opportunity of either re-electing the current governor, Dr. Fayemi or voting for a new governor among the scores of gubernatorial aspirants parading themselves on the platforms of various political parties in the state.
The leading political parties angling the top seat in the state include the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and Accord Party(AP). Among the parties, the PDP has the highest number of gubernatorial aspirants.
As at last count, the party has 32 aspirants. In the list are Mr Ayo Fayose, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, Chief Abiodun Aluko, Mr Dele Omoyeni, Senator Gbenga Aluko, Hon Tunji Odeyemi,  Dr Peter Obafemi, Dr Bode Olowoporoku, Ambassador Dare Bejide, Mr Bodunde Adeyanju, Chief Ropo Ogunbolude, Chief Reuben Famuyibo, Mr Ranti Akerele and Mr Bimbo Adeyanju among others.
It will be recalled that PDP was formally in control of the political affairs of the state before the Fayemi- led administration came on board through the law courts. Dr. Fayemi, who has declared his intention to seek re-election on the banner of the APC came on board through judicial pronouncement on October 16, 2010 having engaged  Engr Oni of the PDP in a fierce and delicate legal battle that lasted three and a half years.
With the court nullifying Engr Segun Oni’s election and awarding same to Fayemi, the PDP became  the biggest opposition party in the state with huge party faithful and followers in all the 177 wards of the state.
To return to the Government House, the PDP  has to get its acts together. from the look of things, it appears all is not well with the leadership of Ekiti PDP as the problems in the party seem enormous.  Keen political observers have wondered why the party that hardly solves its internal affairs without violence.
The ruling APC also has a fair of crisis. Since members of the present State Working Committee (SWC) under the chairmanship of Ijesa Isu Ekiti born Mr Makanjuola Ogundipe, the state executive council has been enmeshed in internal wrangling, which began in 2011 when the Ogundipe-led exco came on board.
Though, one of the problems the leadership of the party met on ground is the difficult question of which of the three senatorial districts  should produce the next governor of the state, an issue must have informed agitation for a rotation of governorship slot to the South Senatorial District
Protagonists of zoning
Protagonists of zoning are of the view that since the North and Central have produced  governors at different times in the past,  it is only natural that the governorship slot be zoned to the South District.
This group further argued that any attempt to zone the governorship slot to the South Senatorial District would produce a weak candidate, since the PDP is currently an opposition party in the state.
Thus, in the PDP, members went to the last governorship primary with sharp group loyalties.
During the primary, the loyalty of individual members were tilted towards its three leading leaders- ,Mr Fayose, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade and Engr Segun Oni. The alliance between Fayose and Olubolade had produced Ogundipe against Hon. Akin Omole which was the candidate of Irewolede Group led by Oni.
Consensus candidate
Interestingly Ogundipe later fought Fayose when it was alleged that he, Ogundipe, the state chairman of the party was routing for Olubolade to become a consensus candidate of the party.
The last straw that brought the camel’s back was the appointment of an 11-member template committee to select the consensus candidate of the party headed by a retired High Court judge, Justice Edward Ojuolape in July last year, an exercise  the State Working Committee had no input.
The issue was said to have set the whole stage on fire . Despite the opposition mounted by some of the aspirants to the setting up of the body, and when it was apparent that Ogundipe was determined to get his way at all cost, on the fateful day members of the committee were to be inaugurated, supporters of those opposed to the committee mobilized to the party secretariat to disrupt the programme.
In the skirmish that ensued, a former speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kola Adefemi was hit on the head, injured and was later admitted for treatment in an hospital while others sustained various degrees of injuries
This singular incident has led to the polarization of the party exco, a development that led to the state secretary of the party, Dr Tope Aluko, a sympathizer of Fayose, leading  his own faction of the party exco to jettison the party’s activities at the party’s secretariat since July despite the intervention of the Bayelsa State Governor, Mr. Seriake Dickson- led reconciliation committee.
Throughout this period virtually all the party’s activities were grounded, business at the party’s secretariat was at the lowest ebb.
However, respite came the way of the party recently following the  meeting of President Goodluck Jonathan with some notable gubernatorial aspirants and other critical stake holders.
Though, at the meeting it was reported that the president said he did not have any anointed candidate he was said to have echoed it to the hearing of those in attendance that he would still support a consensus candidate.
Considering the limited time left before the gubernatorial election and the time for primary, whether or not the PDP will resolve the wrangling and come up with a consensus candidate is a question of time. their action

Jonathan “Never Accused” Former Service Chiefs Of Unnecessary Competition, Presidency Says

The presidency has dismissed as “untrue and misleading,” media reports which claimed that President Jonathan said in Yola on Tuesday that he “fired” former service chiefs because of “unhealthy competition” amongst them.
“It appears that for reasons of mischief and reckless sensationalism, a section of the media deliberately chose to misrepresent the President’s innocuous and clear call for greater synergy and inter-service cooperation in the war against terrorism,” presidential spokesman Reuben Abati said.
He said the President Jonathan at no time during his remarks in Yola say that the former chiefs were guilty of undue rivalry, nor did he say that such unhealthy rivalry was responsible for recent security breaches in Adamawa and other parts of the country.
“As Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces and Chief Security Officer of the Federation, President Jonathan is fully aware of the importance and sensitivity of all defence and security-related matters,” Abati declared.
“If he had any reprimand or admonition for the former service chiefs, which he does not, he would not have cavalierly given it at a public function as the media falsely reported.”
He said the President has nothing but praise for the manner in which the outgoing service chiefs did their job in very challenging circumstances and did not in Yola suggest or imply that any wrongdoing, lack of cooperation or unhealthy competition was responsible for the recent changes in the Military High Command.
“Members of the Armed Forces and all objective observers know that such changes are routine and in the interest of the growth and well-being of the Armed Services.
“President Jonathan has no need therefore to justify the recent changes to anyone and the recourse by the media to a totally off-the-mark interpretation of his remarks in Yola to explain the changes was most unnecessary and pointless,” the statement said.

Mr. Alhassan added that Imo Command had been on the trail of the suspect for years after escaping to Ondo State.
Mrs. Ogundeji described the allegations against her as untrue and said she runs a herbal clinic, and those who were arrested were her patients and servants.
Ogundeji also said she had several businesses including dredging sand and construction companies in Imo, Rivers and Ondo State.
Sources confirmed that the suspect owned the De-Choice Construction Company at Ore in Ondo State, andT three filling station in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Her husband, Mr. Abiodun Ogundeji said he is a civil engineer with Chevron in Rivers State and claimed no knowledge of his wife's 'baby factory' business saying her businesses are construction, oil and gas.
One of the people arrested confirmed that nearly all of them were impregnated in Imo State and transferred to Ondo State.
The source said after giving birth, their babies were collected and taken away by 'madam,' and the whereabouts of their babies is unknown.
Many of the arrested people were unwilling to talk about the owner of the 'baby factory.'

Senate refuse to hear notice of defection by 11 senators

The Senate on Thursday deferred the request by Sen. Bukola Saraki that the notice of defection of 11 PDP senators to the APC be read on the floor of the Senate.
Saraki raised a Point of Order under the Senate Standing Order 15, which stipulates that a matter of privilege shall be given urgent attention by the senate.
Saraki said in Abuja that it was important for the letter to be read on the floor to formally inform the Senate of their defection to the opposition.
“A notice by a letter was communicated yesterday (Wednesday) to your Chair on notification of the change of political party by myself and 10 other senators from the platform of the PDP to the APC.
“So, I felt that it was necessary for me to bring to your attention that the letter has not yet been read,” Saraki said.
The Deputy Senate President, Sen. Ike Ekeremadu, who presided over the Thursday’s plenary, said the matter could not be discussed because the Senate President, Sen. David Mark was not in town.
Ekweremadu said that Mark told him that a meeting had been scheduled with the defecting senators for next Monday to discuss the matter.
He said that the matter should be left until the Senate president returned from his trip outside Abuja but this explanation did not go down well with Saraki.
Ekweremadu3 said, “the Senate president had travelled and before he travelled he told me you had a discussion with him and agreed to have a meeting on Monday.
“Unfortunately this is my own understanding of your dialogue with him and he is not here.
“So I believe that we would stand down any issue relating to that until he comes back,” Ekweremadu ruled.
The explanation led to an exchange of words as Saraki was insisting that the issue of the letter had nothing to do with Mark’s intention to meet with the senators.
Sen. Danjuma Goje also rose up to insist that the notification letter should be read because he and 10 other senators had defected from the PDP to APC.
This threw the chamber into confusion with PDP and APC senators engaging each other in a shouting match.
Goje said, “myself, and 10 others presented a letter to the senate president formally, informing him to inform the chamber that we have defected from the PDP to the APC.
“We thought the letter would have been read yesterday but it was not and we felt that it should be read today.
“I feel it is our right and privilege for that letter to be read. So, I demand that that letter be read.”
Ekweremadu, however, explained to Goje that a decision to defer the matter had already been taken because he (Ekweremadu) was not in possession of the letter.
Also speaking, the Senate Minority Leader Sen. George Akume (APC-Benue) argued that there was no reason to delay their request since a similar matter had taken place in the House of Representatives.
“Mr President, I speak on behalf of those of us who have sworn to protect the constitution of this country.
“This country has only one Constitution that guides the country. Therefore, what is constitutional in the House of Representatives cannot be unconstitutional in the senate,’’ Akume said.
Ekweremadu advised other senators to shelve the matter and continue debate on the 2014 Appropriation Bill.

Soldiers removed our posters, replaced them with PDP’s, APC claims

Soliders, in the late hours of Monday in Adamawa, removed posters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and replaced them with those of Nigeria’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, the opposition party has claimed.
The Interim National Vice Chairman of the APC for the North East Zone, Umar Duhu, confirmed that soldiers of the 23rd armoured brigade carried out the action ahead of the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state on Tuesday.
The APC had on Monday inaugurated the state’s interim committee. Mr. Duhu said prior to the event, the party had cause to put up is posters, billboards and fliers across all strategic locations in Yola, the Adamawa capital.
“However, later in the night; immediately after the curfew period has set in, we visibly saw military men with their guns hanging on their necks, busy removing our posters and replacing them with that of the PDP and President Jonathan 2015,” Mr. Duhu said.
Mr. Duhu said his party had evidence of the allegation describing it as “very unbecoming of the military that was supposed to be non-partisan”’
The APC leader advised the military to stay out of politics. He said the military should know that they are being paid with tax payers’ money to protect the integrity of Nigeria, and they are not supposed to be partisan.
We will resist impunity
Mr. Duhu also accused the ruling PDP of trying to intimidate the opposition using the military. He said the APC is ready to face the challenges.
“All this draconian method of ensuring that the president is returned by hook or crook ; we will make sure we resist it, even if it means we will lose our lives, we are ready to lose it to make sure that democracy in Nigeria survives. So we will not allow that,” he said.
He also restated the position expressed by the APC in the past that the PDP had decided to merge with security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
“All we are telling Nigerians is that we are determined to challenge them head on. If you look at all revolutions around the world, the military will continue to shoot the people until they get tired and also drop their guns and join the crowd.
“So we are ready to upturn the system we have today to ensure that probity and rule of law hold supreme in Nigeria and we are ready to do that even if it means we lose our lives in the process,” he said.
Jonathan shields corrupt elements
Mr. Duhu also accused President Jonathan of shielding corrupt elements in his government. He said there was massive corruption involved in the construction of the secondary school built by the Nigerian Air force, which Mr. Jonathan had gone to Adamawa to commission.
Mr. Duhu cited the reported incident of the harassment of journalists by Air force officers just to stop them from witnessing the event and reporting what they saw.
“What happened with the harassment of journalists during the president’s visit is unfortunate. The President said the CDS was appointed because he was prudent with resources, then why were they preventing journalists from taking inventory of the materials there.
“What the president said about the CDS is not correct and that is why people say he is shielding corruption. Anything Jonathan tells Nigerians about corruption is just lies; Nigerians should begin to say no to impunity. Impunity is what is keeping the PDP alive and we are not going to allow it to thrive in Nigeria,” he said.
There were reports that some journalists working for various media houses were stoned by Air force personnel at the venue of the project commissioning.
According to the Guardian Newspaper, the reporters were stoned out of the venue by men of the Air force on an order from an officer suspected to be the head of the school Mr. Jonathan visited to commission.
The paper said trouble started for the journalists at the venue when the Public Relations Officer of 75 Strike Force, Yola, Ishaku Abdullahi, a Flying Officer, asked journalists to wait in one of the classrooms for their accreditation.
It said later on an officer with a nametag A.A. Dogo, suspected to be the head of the school slated for commissioning, came and asked who directed the reporters to sit inside the classroom. But after an explanation from the chairman of the correspondents’ chapel, Umar Dankano, of the Peoples Daily Newspapers, the aggressive officer left without a word.
A few minutes after, another man dressed in a rough suit with a name tag SPA Emmanuel C. Anita, arrived and ordered the reporters who were waiting to be accredited to get out of the venue, saying that their presence was not needed. Before Mr. Dankano could offer some explanations, some men of the Air force started throwing stones at the reporters.
It took the intervention of some military officers from the 23 Amoured Brigade, Yola, to rescue the journalists out of the venue
It was unsuccessfully to speak to the spokesperson of the 23rd Brigade, Nuhu Jafaru, throughout Wednesday. Several calls to his cell phone failed to connect, and he also did not respond to an SMS sent to him.

Remaining PDP Senators And House Of Reps Members Demand Automatic Tickets For 2015 Race

The Speaker of the House and some members last night

Following the threat of defection by 11 senators to the All Progressive Congress, 11 PDP governors attend a meeting Tuesday night with the leadership and 130 members of the caucus in the House of Representatives at the National Assembly in Abuja.
House of Representative Leader, Mulikat Akande Adeola told the National Chairman that members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would not defect to the opposition party Alliance for Progressives Change (APC) if they were given automatic tickets for the 2015 election race.
Automatic tickets are distributed to party favorites who represent the party well and are popular with their constituents.  If Senators are successful in their blackmail threat they would not have to compete during election primaries, and avoid having to confront questions on their record from their constituents.
House of Representative Leader, Adeola said this was the first time in the 7th Assembly that the PDP Chairman and Governors would be meeting with the members. She asked members of the party to be steadfast and show more commitment in moving the party forward.
PDP National Chairman Muazu responded, "There will be a regular meetings between the House caucus and party from this moment onward ".
Muazu said the lack of adequate communication and linkages between the House caucus and the party led to the defection crisis. He promised the house caucus would deal with the question of the automatic ticket.
The meeting was attended by 11 Governors: Akway Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio; Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji; Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi; Ondo State Olusegun Mimiko; Delta State Governor Emmanuel Udughan; Kaduna State Governor, Ramalan Yero; Taraba State Governor, Garba Umaru; Governor of State Rivers State Liyel Imoke; Niger State Governor, Aliyu Babangida; Katsina State Governor, Ibrahim Shema, and Deputy Governor of Jigawa State.
Also, Ondo State Governor, Olsegun Mimiko and Anambra State Governor, Peter came into the venue of the meeting in solidarity with their PDP counterparts but left before the close door meeting of the party.

Kano State APC House Of Reps Members Refuse To Defect With Shekarau To PDP

“We wish to make it categorically clear today that we are not leaving the APC for any political party,” the Leader of APC Kano Caucus and Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon Suleiman Kawu, said at a press briefing today. “We have sacrificed a lot and have come a long way in the struggle to emancipate our people from the bondage of PDP misrule.”
Their declaration followed an announcement earlier in the day in his home by Shekarau, the immediate past governor of Kano State, that he was leaving the APC for the PDP.
Making their position known, the legislators said that the birth of APC became imperative due to the fact that the PDP-led government has held Nigeria and Nigerians to ransom for almost 16 years with no visible development.

They called on the leadership and all the party faithful to ensure transparency, fairness, internal democracy and adherence to the rule of law and laid down procedures, towards providing a level playing ground for party members to realise their individual ambitions without hindrance.

Said the APC Kano Caucus members, “At this crucial stage of our journey, we will not look back, or backtrack, we will not look sideways, we will not leave our beloved APC for anything else.”

Stressing their disappointment with the PDP, they said, “Today under PDP, we are witnessing unprecedented level of corruption, insecurity, poverty and political instability in Nigeria more than ever before. We therefore see the coming of APC as an opportunity to right the many wrongs of the PDP and once again put Nigeria back on the pedestal of growth, development, economic prosperity and make it an egalitarian society where rule of law and social justice prevail for the common good.”

Anambra “destitute persons” sue Lagos government, seek N1 billion damages

Lagos Governor, Babatunde Fashola

A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed February19 for further mention of a suit filed by “seven destitute persons” against the Lagos State Government over what they called inhuman treatment.
The plaintiffs are Joseph Aniebonam, Osondu Mbuto, Osondu Agwu, Nnenna Ogbonna, Emily Okoroariri, Friday Ndukwe and Onyeka Ugwu.
The seven instituted the suit for and on behalf of 76 others.
Joined as respondents are the Attorney General of Lagos State, Ade Ipaye; and the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Umar Manko.
When the case was mentioned on Wednesday, the counsel to the plaintiffs, Ugo Ugwunnadi, told the court that the case was coming up for the first time.
He informed the court that he had only been served with court processes by the first respondent (AG), and had yet to receive any process from the second respondent.
He, therefore, applied for a date for hearing.
The counsel representing the Lagos Attorney General, Tayo Odupitan, told the court that he had filed a counter-affidavit, written address and an exhibit, all in response to the plaintiffs’ suit.
He, however, informed the court that Mr. Ipaye has indicated his intention to defend the suit personally.
Meanwhile, counsel to the Commissioner of Police, Sam Adebeshin, told the court that he had yet to regularise the processes on behalf of the second respondent.
Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia adjourned the case to February 19 for mention.
The applicants, had in their motion, asked the court to declare that they, as Nigerian citizens, were entitled to their fundamental rights as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
They are seeking a declaration that their arrests and detention in various camps in Lagos and subsequent “deportation” to Anambra on July 24, 2013, for no offence, amounted to a serious breach of their fundamental rights.
They are also seeking an order mandating the respondents to tender a written apology to them by publishing same in three national newspapers continuously for 30 days for unlawful and gross violation of their constitutional rights.
They also want an order directing the Lagos government to re-integrate the applicants into Lagos State, and a perpetual injunction restraining the respondents, their agents, and officers from further deporting or refusing them free entry into the state.
In addition, the applicants want N1 billion damages jointly and severally for a breach of their rights.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State government, in its counter-affidavit, contended that the “transportation” of the plaintiffs was not done out of malice, but out of genuine intention to re-unite the applicants with their families.
They further averred that the applicants were assisted by the state government to rejoin their families after pleading that they had no homes, relatives or businesses in Lagos State.

APC set to drag Mbu, Rivers Police Commissioner, to UN

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, on Wednesday constituted a three-member committee to compile a comprehensive list of atrocities committed by the State Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mbu since he assumed office in February, 2013, and send to the United Nations.
The Committee is headed by Andy Nweye, with Chukwuemeka Eze as Secretary and Emeka Bekee as the third member. It has two weeks to submit its report.
Mr. Mbu had come under heavy criticism from the party because of the manner the state police command had handled the lingering political crisis in the state.
The police chief was alleged to have taken sides with a group of politicians opposed to the state governor. He is also accused of taking orders from the First Lady, Patience Jonathan, an indigene of the state against the governor, Chibuike Amaechi, and his supporters.
Mr. Amaechi had not only repeatedly demanded his redeployment, but also dragged him to the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC.
Inaugurating the panel in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, the state APC interim Chairman, Davies Ikanya, said its members were chosen based on merit and expressed confidence that they would do a good job.
Mr. Ikanya tasked the committee to come up with at least 100 sins of Mr. Mbu against the people of the state for transmission to the United Nations; claiming the relevant institutions in Nigeria lacked the capacity to call him to order.
“This committee is made up of well-informed political experts and meticulous researchers; so I expect you to come up with a list of not less than 100 sins of CP Mbu against Rivers State and its people for formal submission to the UN as it seems that the Nigerian institutions in charge of the Police Force in Nigeria are toying with the security and lives of the people of Rivers State,” Mr. Ikanya said.
“True, the assignment is difficult but CP Mbu has made your work easy by his brazen partisanship in favour of the opposition Peoples Democratic party (PDP) in the state.
“As a result of his overzealousness to impress his masters as an undeclared member of the PDP, the police commissioner commits a fresh sin against the good people of Rivers State almost on a daily basis.”
The APC chairman said he regretted that Rivers State has not known peace since the CP assumed duties last year and that the state now perched at the edge of the precipice security-wise.
He said the party’s position is that Mr. Mbu be immediately redeployed outside Rivers State saying he is a curse to the State and her people. He said he regretted that calls by some well-meaning Nigerians, including the National Assembly, for Mr. Mbu’s redeployment has fallen on the deaf ears of the police authorities in Abuja and the Federal Government.
He, however, expressed strong belief that “there will surely be a day of reckoning, and when that day comes, CP Mbu will be called to account for his stewardship in Rivers State. When that day of
reckoning comes, the work of your committee will play a big role in getting Mbu to pay for his sins against Rivers State and its people.”
Responding on behalf of the other members of the panel, Mr. Nweye thanked the chairman for the confidence reposed in them and promised that they would live up to expectation.
Meanwhile, Mr. Ikanya has expressed dismay at the stand of the Labour Party, PDP, a factional National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Vincent Umeh, as well other groups that condemned the position of the national leadership of APC that its members in the National Assembly should shoot down any Executive Bills until the anomalies happening in Rivers State were corrected.
He said, “It is sad that what some of these organisations are saying is that they prefer that Rivers State should be subjected to the type of impunity acts associated with CP Mbu and his cohorts instead of calling the Presidency to order as regards its wicked roles in this macabre dance in Rivers State.
“With this development, we are gradually knowing our foes and friends. Very sad that not minding all that Rivers State has sacrificed and contributed to build this nation, our plight no longer counts; but God is watching.”
