LAGOS — Policemen attached to Dolphin division, Ikoyi, yesterday, engaged a five-man robbery gang in a shoot-out, which left one of the robbery suspects dead, and three others arrested.
Report said the gang was operating in an estate around Ikoyi where they carried out a house-to-house raid, dispossessing their victims of cash, phones and other valuables.
Policemen from the division, said to have been contacted by one of the residents, stormed the area and on sighting them, the robbers reportedly opened fire during which one of them was gunned down.
Attempt by three suspected members of the gang to escape in their operational vehicle failed as they were reportedly left behind following their inability to catch up with the vehicle.
Items recovered from the suspects, all residents of Ajegunle and Olodi Apapa areas of Lagos, according to the Police, included laptops, Ipad, wristwatches, assorted phones stolen from their victims and house breaking implement..
One of the suspects who identified himself as John Chukwu, told policemen that his gang’s main target was a couple who just arrived from the United Kingdom.
He further disclosed that his gang got the information about the couple’s arrival from a resident of Ikoyi but expressed the gang’s disappointment, saying: “When we got there, we did not see the money and gold which our informant claimed the couple brought. Out of frustration, we decided to raid other people so as not to return empty handed because of the trouble we went through.”
The suspects, as gathered, would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
