A man armed with AK 47 rifle was killed and his accomplice escaped while three residents of Federal Low Cost Housing, Bauchi were injured following a suspected armed robbery attack on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the early hours when civil servants and other residents of the area were going to their places of business.
An authoritative source told newsmen in Bauchi that two men, armed with AK 47 rifles, had stationed themselves in a hidden place in the estate and first attacked a policeman at dawn.
The source, who wants to remain anonymous, further said that the attacked policeman escaped and the suspected robbers later attacked and injured three civilians resident in the area.
He added that some residents mobilised and pursued the bandits while others alerted security operatives who responded by killing one of the gunmen before the other escaped.
The source said that security operatives recovered one AK 47 rifle with two magazines and 30 rounds of live ammunition.
The source said the injured civilians were taken to the Teaching Hospital, Bauchi, and were responding to treatment.
The sporadic shooting created panic in the estate making residents and passers-by as well as school children to run for their dear lives.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Bauchi, Hassan Auyo, confirmed the incident adding that one of the armed men was killed during exchange of fire.
