Police foil bank robbery in Aba



The police say it foiled an early morning robbery attempt on a bank in Aba, Abia state, after shooting dead one of the suspected raiders, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The Commissioner of Police in Abia, Usman Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, told NAN that the robbery was foiled as the gang broke into the bank located on Asa Road.
Mr. Mohammed said that the robbers came at about 2 a.m. and attempted to force their way into the banking hall when policemen promptly stopped them. He said one of the robbers was gunned down while others escaped.
The Aba Area Police Commander, Rabiu Dayi, who visited the scene, also confirmed the incident.
Mr. Dayi said 17 expended shells of AK 47 riffle, a master key and a mobile phone handset were recovered at the scene of the crime.
“They were said to be six but one of them was shot dead while others fled when they noticed the heavy presence of policemen,” he said.
Anari Anari, the Officer in-Charge of the Police Command’s Anti-robbery Unit, appealed to the public to provide useful information on the fleeing robbers.
Mr. Anari said that the commercial city and its environs were no longer safe for criminal activities.
