Security agents in Ondo State have arrested four suspected sea pirates allegedly operating in the Ilaje/Ese-Odo local government area headquarters.
The Ondo State command of the Nigerian Police Force said the arrested suspects were responsible for several attacks along the waters in the Awoye/Ubale area. The suspects are Kingsley Sunday, Felix Okiki, Okumagba Ibere and Godspower Happy. The suspects reportedly confessed to being indigenes of Delta and Edo States.
A security source disclosed that the four suspects were apprehended through the combined efforts of the officers of the Nigerian Police Force and members of a local vigilante in Ilaje /Ese-Odo who laid an ambush for the suspected criminals.
The source revealed that the inhabitants of the riverine area alerted the local vigilante group whose members swung into action and subsequently called for police reinforcement. The suspects had reportedly finished their illegal operations and were trying to escape with their loots when they were all arrested.
A spokesperson for the Ondo State police command, Wole Ogodo, confirmed the arrests. Mr. Ogodo said two of the four suspects were receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Igbokoda for injuries they sustained while struggling to escape from the scene.
The police spokesman disclosed that all the goods stolen by the suspects could not be recovered as they fell into the sea as the combined team of the police and the vigilante tried to subdue the suspects and arrest them.
The police officer praised the effort of the vigilante group, adding that they had assisted the security operatives to detect and arrest criminals in the society. Mr. Ogodo pointed out that the job of effective crime control calls for joint efforts by the police and members of each community.
He stated that the task of going after criminals should not be the responsibility of the police alone. He encouraged community members to report suspected criminals at the nearest police station. He also promised to charge the suspects to court after investigations into their alleged crimes are concluded.
