Apparently rejuvenated Boko Haram sect members last night launched coordinated attacks against the Nigerian military at several check points in Damaturu, Yobe State.
The military spokesman in Damaturu, Captain Eli Lazarus, confirmed the attacks, but said that the troops recovered vehicles and other weapons belonging to the sect, and killed several terrorists.
He explained that the Boko Haram fighters arrived in dozens at about 6pm and opened fire on the Nigerian troops at a check point close to the NNPC Mega Petrol Station, and the soldiers swiftly engaged them.
While the gun duel was going on, according to the spokesman, other terrorists emerged from the forest at other locations in Damaturu, similarly attacking the troops, but they were repelled and contained.
Last night attacks were the first major appearance of the sect in the state following the Sallah celebrations.
