Absentee Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson, Moves to ‘Relocate’ Government To Abuja

Gov. Seriake Dickson

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State, who has been accused by critics of abdicating his constitutional duties, yesterday upgraded the Bayelsa Liaison Office in Abuja and immediately transferred his Chief of Staff, Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, to head the office to prepare for the governor’s “prolonged stays” in the city.
A statement signed by Dickson’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said the move was in view of the increasing engagements and official programmes of the governor and the strategic nature of these engagements to the conduct of government's business.
Dickson, who has spent most of his time in the corridors of power in Aso Rock since President Jonathan personally fast-tracked him into office, sees his perpetual presence around the president as a survival strategy.
The governor also immediately announced Chief Ikiogha’s replacement, naming Dame (Mrs.) Didi Walson-Jack as the new Chief of Staff and expressing the confidence that her “rich civil service background” will help her in effectively repositioning the administration of Government House.
There are indications, however, that Chief Ikiogha may turn down the appointment.  Some of his loyalists say the redeployment has political undertones and is aimed at easing him out of the mainstream politics in Bayelsa.
It will be recalled that Dickson last year appointed into office in Bayelsa, Dame Patience Jonathan, the President’s wife, as a Permanent Secretary.  Critics point out that Mrs. Jonathan has not done one hour of work in the State since that appointment.
Text of the statement:
“In view of the increasing engagements and official programmes of His Excellency, the Governor of Bayelsa State in the Nation’s Federal Capital as well as the strategic nature of these engagements to the conduct of government's business, His Excellency, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson has approved the upgrading of the Bayelsa State Liaison office with immediate effect.

Accordingly, in line with this upgrade, His Excellency has approved the immediate transfer of Chief Diekivie Ikiogha, to head the new Abuja office so as to meet up with the high responsibility and demand of the new office.

The appointment takes immediate effect.

His Excellency expresses confidence in the ability of Chief Ikiogha to transform the liaison office to match its new status and this is based on his wealth of experience as a politician and public servant.

Similarly, His Excellency has approved the appointment of Dame (Mrs.) Didi Walson-Jack as the new Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa. His Excellency is confident that her rich civil service background will stand her in good stead in effectively repositioning the administration of Government House,”
