Nigerian military on Monday said it destroyed over 20 vehicles transporting suspected terrorists who carried out an attack on a military formation in Borno State.
The defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, in statement said the vehicles were destroyed during military operation to track the insurgents who carried out the last Friday’s pre-dawn attacks on Mohammed Kur Barracks, Bama.
Hundreds of suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched a fierce attack Friday on Bama, Borno state, sacking the military barrack there, and killing troops and their families in what a senior military official called another “sad day” for a town that has witnessed multiple bloodshed this year.
Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said the vehicles destroyed were the ones used during the attack on the barracks and were sited through air surveillance as the terrorists were making efforts to cross the borders back to their haven in Cameroun.
He also said that, although a good number of the insurgents escaped with bullet wounds, some others have been arrested while over 50 of them died in a fire exchange with ground troops in the ongoing operations to apprehend fleeing terrorists.
The spokesperson said the military lost 15 soldiers mostly from the Friday attack, while some died during the pursuit. He also said a total of 5 civilians died during the attack.
He added that an intensive cordon and search operations to fish out the insurgents who might be lurking around communities in the area is ongoing.
“Meanwhile, families affected by the attacks have been relocated to other military locations,” Mr. Olukolade said.
A state of emergency is currently on in Borno State (as well as Adamawa and Yobe) as the military tries to dislodge the outlawed Boko Haram.
