Gbenga Daniel
The national leadership of the Labour Party has chosen a former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, as the leader of the party in the state.
The party’s decision was taken at its National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held last week in Akure, Ondo State.
The Ogun State chapter of the party had last week Friday announced the expulsion of Mr. Daniel from the party in a statement jointly signed by its State Chairman, Simeon Olabode, and Secretary, Sunday Oginni.
Justifying the former governor’s expulsion, the officials said, “Our position was not a fight against those who have chosen to join our progressive mindset, but against tyranny called Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD).”
However, the national leaders of the party, led by its national chairman, Dan Iwuanyanwu, reportedly apologized to Mr. Daniel for ‘certain skirmishes noticed prior to the meeting.’
Mr. Iwuanyanwu also directed all members of the part to defer to Mr. Daniel in all matters concerning the party in Ogun state.
The party chairman confirmed the NEC’s decision.
He said that those responsible for the earlier announcement of Mr. Daniel’s expulsion have been referred to the party’s disciplinary committee for further action.
A release from Mr. Daniel’s media aide, Adenekan Seun, on Tuesday also quoted Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State expressing his admiration and respect for the person of Mr. Daniel; describing him as “the biggest stakeholder in the Ogun project today.”
The Ondo governor reportedly commended Mr. Daniel for the high rate of patronage that the Labour Party now enjoys in the state. He noted that the party cannot afford to miss out on the opportunity to leverage on the intellectual and political experience that Mr. Daniel brings to the table with his presence in the party.
Mr. Mimiko is a member of the Labour Party and is its only elected governor.
In his response, Mr. Daniel thanked the national chairman and other national executives for reposing great confidence in him. He assured the party that he was ready to bring his experience to bear on the fortunes of the party, promising to deliver the state to Labour Party.
He stated that his political machinery was well oiled and raring to go all the way in emancipating Ogun people on the undefiled platform of the Labour party. He also noted that the Ogun project was too tasking to be left in the hands of ‘political minions and pretenders,’ urging all well-meaning members of the party in the state to join hands with him in the march to restore hope in Ogun State.
Meanwhile a harmonization committee has been inaugurated under Mr. Daniel to facilitate the setting up of a new executive for Ogun State that will cut across defecting members from all the three political parties that have joined the Labour Party.
