NMA Says Death of Ex-Gov. Agagu Reinforces Its Call for Public Holiday For Citizen Check-Ups

Olusegun Agagu

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has reiterated its call on the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria to declare one day of the year as public holiday for all citizens to have a health check-up, pledging to offer it without charge.
The doctors’ association, in a statement signed by its President, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, said this as it expressed condolences to the Ondo State Government and people over the death of the former governor, Chief Olusegun Agagu.  Chief Agagu died shortly after his return from a vacation in the United States on Friday.
The NMA said that the circumstances of the former governor’s death may be the result of an unhealthy medical backlog, reiterating its position that the Federal Government should commit to a program of free health check-up for all citizens. The NMA will make the service free if the government will grant the public holiday to enable it conduct the exercise.
Dr. Enabulele stressed that all citizens must be encouraged to develop the habit of regular health check-ups in order for them to know their health status.
With particular reference to Ondo State, the NMA urged the government to immortalize former Governor Agagu by taking its own decision on the proposal.
“As a way of immortalizing this great son of Ondo State, we wish to most humbly request the Governor and Government of Ondo State to consider declaring a public holiday dedicated to free health check-up for citizens of Ondo State”, it said.
It would be recalled that a few weeks ago, the NMA officially unveiled the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Tambuwal as the face of health check-up in Nigeria.  It urged him to use his position to influence his colleagues and the Federal Government to make it formal that public officials do their health check-ups in the country as against taking overseas flights every time for the purpose.
Similarly, on the occasion of the return to the country of Taraba State Governor Danbaba Suntai, the NMA requested that the office of a chief medical director be statutorily created which will be responsible for checking the health status of public officials so as to determine their capacity to govern, as opposed to the waste of public funds on frivolous foreign trips for mere check-ups and minor treatments.
