The prison van after the attack yesterday
It was just learned that a prison warder simply identified as “Mr. Oche” whose prison vehicle came under fire yesterday has died of gunshot wounds. Yesterday, Mr. Oche was driving a vehicle that conveyed some criminal suspects for trial when the vehicle was attacked by gunfire. A police source said Mr. Oche was one of the victims of the attack mounted by gunmen whose objective was to rescue two men the police described as hardened criminals suspected to be the leaders of kidnapping rings in Delta State.
Mr. Oche’s death brings to six the number of casualties from the brazen attack, according to our source.
The latest victim had been taken to Warri Central Hospital for treatment, but doctors could not save him as he died early today.
Nine detainees awaiting trial escaped from the prison vehicle in the moment after the attack. However, by this morning the police in Delta State said they have recaptured two of the escapees. In addition, a police source said one of the escaped inmates was killed in a shoot out while a fourth one had been delivered to the police by his pastor.
Five of the suspects, considered armed and dangerous, remain at large.
